It is the policy of the State of California that both parties become self-supporting in a reasonable amount of time. For short-term marriages, less than 10 years, that may mean up to half the length of the marriage. However, the court has broad discretion in making a determination on the duration of support. For long-term marriages, there is no set termination date.
